Duct Tape and Pest Control

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

How many uses for duct tape are there? Way too many! I don't think we have that kind of time. However, let's talk about one great way we can use it in the garden.

Here in Massachusetts, in July, all the plants seem to be booming and growing. That also means some pests. If you have any squash plants- zucchini, pumpkins, butternut, etc- you know the dreaded Squash bug (Anasa tristis). It seems like no matter what natural deterrent I've used it never fully gets rid of them (Neem oil seems to help best). It turns into a bit of a battle ground every evening as I check all my leaves and squish those little guys.

Why is it important to get rid of them? When they start munching on your plants they are actually spreading a bacteria systemically in the plant that eventually kills it.

Ok, so how is duct tape helping here?

Instead of damaging leaves by squishing those eggs off the under side of them, wrap some duct tape on your hand (sticky side out naturally) and the eggs will stick right to the tape making it easy to dispose of!

Hope this helpful garden tip helps you out if you end up in squash bug war.

Duct tape will be your secret weapon! Let me know how this garden hack works for you!
