Q & A : Quick Tips for Indoor Gardening

Updated: Feb 4

Which herbs tend to grow well indoors?

In my experience, Basil, Mint, Parsley, Thyme, & Oregano seem to grow well indoors.

How much light do herbs need?

Most herbs will require anywhere from 4-6 hours min of light. Keeping them by the window may be ok for a while, but not ideal long term. The sunlight is filtered differently through windows and may stress out plants over time. Small grow lights come in handy for these circumstances. LED or T5 lights are best.

How often should indoor herbs be watered?

Everyone has a different level of moisture in their house, and also it depends on the style of container you are growing your herbs in.

Clay pots will wick moisture right out of your plants fast, compared to a standard plastic pot that might keep your plants moist longer.

Herbs like to have moist soil, but not soggy feet. Always check the moisture of the soil with your finger to see if your plants need water. There is no set schedule. The top layer may be a little dry, but underneath the surface might still be damp. If you over-water, you will see signs of distress such as yellowing on the leaves. Some herbs like Rosemary prefer a bit dryer soil, but the average herb will like moist, well-drained soil.

One of the growing kits on the market that is the most effective & easiest way to grow herbs in the kitchen is an Aero Garden (my favorite!). With this, you can grow fresh herbs and vegetables in a small hydroponic unit that looks great on your kitchen countertop. The lights are on an automatic timer, it comes with the liquid nutrients AND tells you when to add them. It is so user friendly and everything grow so fast!

And don’t forget…

Trimming your herbs properly will yield you with happy plants. Don’t pluck leaves off. Instead, prune branches down to the next point of growth. In other words, look down the stem and see where leaves are coming out from the main stem - trim just above that point. Herbs love to be trimmed, and once you let grow into a flowering stage they will stop producing. Happy indoor gardening!
