I created a simple 3x5 printable that you can find on my Etsy page to download and use to keep with your seed packets to keep a good inventory on what you have.

Starting seeds is a rewarding and cost-effective way to kick-start your garden. Whether you're an experienced gardener or a novice, starting seeds is a simple and effective way to grow a wide variety of plants from the comfort of your own home. Let's go over the essential steps you need to take to start seeds successfully.

Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, you'll need a few essential items to get started. Here's a list of what you'll need:

  • Seeds: Choose seeds that are fresh and well-suited to your region and climate.

  • Containers: You can use plastic trays, seed-starting trays, or even eggshells to start your seeds. Make sure that your container has drainage holes and is deep enough for the roots to grow.

  • Soil: Choose a sterile, seed-starting soil that's lightweight and well-draining.

  • Water: Consistent moisture is crucial for seeds to germinate, but it's important not to overwater. To ensure proper moisture levels, it's best to water from the bottom if you're using trays.

  • Light: Once your seeds start to germinate, they'll need plenty of light to grow. You can use a grow light or place your seedlings near a bright, south-facing window. Keep the light at least 6" from the top of the seedlings so they don't get "leggy" reaching for light - or else they end up skinny, top heavy, and weak.

  • Air flow: Once they start growing, make sure to put a fan on near by at least once a day. Yes, your plants need to hit the gym too! This gives them strength by experiencing some wind.

Prepare Your Soil

Fill your container with seed-starting soil, leaving a little space at the top for watering. Use a spray bottle to moisten the soil, making sure not to overwater it. You want the soil to be moist but not soggy. Follow the instructions on your seed packet to determine how deep to plant your seeds.

Plant Your Seeds

Plant your seeds according to the instructions on the seed packet. It's important to note that different types of seeds have varying germination requirements. While some seeds should be covered with a thin layer of soil, others should be left on the surface. Additionally, certain seeds, like tomatoes and peppers, require warmer temperatures to germinate successfully. Once you've planted your seeds, cover your container with plastic wrap or a clear lid to create a humid environment that will help your seeds germinate.

Provide Consistent Moisture and Light

Check your seeds every day to make sure that the soil stays moist. Use a spray bottle to water your seeds as needed. Once your seeds start to germinate, remove the plastic wrap or lid and place your container in a sunny spot or under a grow light. Make sure to keep the soil moist, but not too wet, and provide enough light for your seedlings to grow strong.

Transplant Your Seedlings

Once your seedlings have grown their first set of true leaves, they're ready to be transplanted into larger containers or into your garden. Gently lift your seedlings out of their container, being careful not to damage the delicate roots. Plant them in a larger container or in the ground, making sure to keep the soil moist and to provide plenty of light and fertilizer.

Starting seeds can be a fun, rewarding, & cost effective way to grow a wide variety of plants from the comfort of your own home. And if you're saving seeds, then it's free food! Woohoo!! By following these simple steps, you can start your seeds successfully and watch your garden grow. Happy Gardening!
