Thoughts on our senses

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

Isn’t it interesting how the most simple thoughts can have such a great impact on us?

Maybe it’s all in the timing of it.

Perhaps, we are more receptive at certain times - I find this to be true. Whatever you believe in: God, many gods, or just the universal energy in general, there is something to be heard when you slow down for a minute, just listen and observe (Especially in the crazy society we exist in today).

The morning after Thanksgiving, I got up and made coffee as usual.

(Coffee is life!)

I stared out the back door as usual, watching as the birds flew around eating the berries on the trees. As I stood there admiring the sparkling frost that had blanketed my garden beds, it made me feel cold. Now, obviously I’m in a heated house, hot coffee in hand. So this sensation of

being cold just by looking at it made

my mind wander…

One needs to feel cold to appreciate warmth. Like playing in the snow all day and coming in the house to warm back up by the fire. However in the summer, one would love to escape the heat to an air conditioned room right? We love both but need the other to help find the balance of comfort. That being said, it made me think: we are always being shifted out of our comfort zone and it’s a good thing!

As I looked out the window I thought, I can’t always feel warm (although I’d love to!). I love to appreciate all the senses of being human. One cannot feel full all the time, it’s good to let your body tell you when you’re hungry - don’t let a clock dictate that to you! (That shit drives me crazy!)

Bottom line is, recognize your senses. It may seem so simple, but there is so much information that you are taking in and you may not even realize it. Close your eyes and let a breeze just touch your face. Walk through the grass barefoot. Even closing your eyes when you eat your favorite food helps you be in the moment and feel the sensation of that taste.

After reading this, I challenge you to close your eyes for a moment and just take in whatever is happening around you. What are the sounds or smells? Explore how that makes you feel.

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper…” ~W.B. Yeats
